The excavation of Plateia Dioikitiriou was undertaken because the municipality of Thessaloniki had chosen the site for the construction of an underground parking lot. This plan was subsequently given up and the Plateia was declared an archaiological zone, in order to arrange and exhibit it for the events of 1997.
